Run the electrical shop, not just the jobs

Where we work

Growing an electrical contracting business in Quebec

Quebec is Canada's electric-heat province, which puts electrical contractors closer to the heating conversation than anywhere else. French-first marketing and a distinct licensing system shape how a Quebec shop grows.

Written by Ali Sedighi, MBALast updated:

Quebec turns the usual Canadian pattern upside down. Instead of gas furnaces, most homes heat with electricity, so electrical contractors sit much closer to the heating conversation: baseboards, electric furnaces, thermal storage, heat pumps and the capacity questions they raise. Montréal, Québec City, Laval, Gatineau, Longueuil, Sherbrooke, Lévis and Saguenay are the largest markets, each with a deep local base of electrical shops.

We are a consulting and marketing service. We never perform, inspect or certify electrical work.

The Quebec electrical market

The answer: an electric-heat market with strong local loyalties and French-first customers.

  • Greater Montréal, Laval and Longueuil. Dense, competitive and heavily multi-unit. Plex and condo work brings owners, syndicates and property managers into the sale.
  • Québec City and Lévis. A large, stable market where reputation and referrals carry weight.
  • Gatineau. Shared economic life with Ottawa, so cross-river competition affects search and pricing.
  • Sherbrooke, Saguenay and the regions. Wider service areas, longer winters and more rural work.

Climate and the busy season

Heating runs for much of the year in Quebec, and the season gets longer the farther a shop works from the St. Lawrence valley. Because so much heat is electric, winter brings heating-related electrical service calls that other provinces send to gas fitters.

The numbers are striking. Statistics Canada found that 70% of Quebec households relied on electricity for primary heat in 2023, with natural gas at only 5%. That makes heating-season capacity planning more important for Quebec electrical shops than for most.

Programs that can move demand, as of October 2026

  • Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program lists grants of up to $6,700 for heat pumps, and larger grants where an electric thermal storage system is installed with a central heat pump.

For electrical owners, this matters directly: thermal storage, heat pumps and their supporting electrical work can all involve an electrical contractor. Hydro-Québec also notes a federal heat pump rebate expected in 2027. Confirm current terms with Hydro-Québec before naming any grant in your marketing.

How we'd approach a Quebec electrical shop

  1. Plan French first. Website, profiles, ads and printed menus are planned in French from day one, with translation in the budget.
  2. Price heating-season service. A clear menu for common heating-related calls protects margin when demand peaks.
  3. Package capacity work. Panel and service upgrades linked to heat pumps or thermal storage, with defined tiers.
  4. Work with plex and condo decision-makers. Multi-unit jobs need a project quote and a longer follow-up sequence.
  5. Plan winter crews. Heating-season demand supports more year-round capacity than in gas-heated provinces.

Budgeting for French-first marketing

French-first marketing has a real cost, and it belongs in the plan rather than as an afterthought. Every service page, profile description, ad variation and printed menu needs a French version written for customers, not machine-translated. For a shop with a dozen service pages and a flat-rate menu of 60 tasks, that is a meaningful one-time project plus ongoing updates when prices change. We budget it from the start so that the menu, the website and the ads stay consistent.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work in French?

Our consulting is delivered in English. For Quebec clients, customer-facing marketing material has to meet French-language requirements, so we plan French versions with qualified translation from the start and budget for them.

Does electric heat change the service mix?

It can. With most homes on electric heat, load, panel capacity and heating-related service work are a larger part of the residential market. Those jobs are good candidates for clear package pricing.

What sales tax applies to your plans in Quebec?

5% GST plus 9.975% QST.
